Verity Newman

I work with home made paper clay. I make this by drying out and breaking up the parent clay. I then add water to make a slip, and add a quantity of paper pulp to this mix, which is dried out and wedged up to incorporate the pulp.

I use paper clay, rather than ordinary clay because of its qualities as a sculptural medium. I can dry the body out with a hairdryer or blowtorch and add wet clay to dry. This means that I can work at speed, giving a sense of immediacy and flow to my work.  Using paper clay also means that I can reuse old clay, often recycling or scavenging clay that has dried out and therefore difficult to use.

Although I work in paper clay I frequently reference ceramic traditions in my work, which is mainly figurative. I use a variety of finishes.
