Jan O'Highway

From an initial training in painting, printmaking, and calligraphy, at Guildford School of Art, I've explored a wide range of materials and styles. Much of my current practice involves fusing ceramic and glass for mosaics and sculpture (I love the vibrancy of light passing through glass) often combining these pieces with reclaimed and found materials in 3-dimensional work.

In print-making I've been developing scanner-photography for fine-art giclée prints; subject matter ranges from plant material to the surreal worlds of toys and industrial products.

Feeling great concern about the huge environmental impact of waste & our indiscriminate use of plastics and oil, I make sculpture from toys (potent symbols both for the personal memories they can trigger, and their archetypal imagery) and found objects such as a squashed can in the road, plastics in the tideline… abandoned, unvalued, changed by time…. the work becomes a metaphor for survival and re-creation.

Teaching includes mosaic & ceramic classes at my Harberton studio, & occasional community educational projects. Co-ordinator of TTTAG, the Transition Town Totnes Arts Group, I enjoy being involved  with  artist-led groups, including the Art Farm Project, British Association of Modern Mosaics, Catalyst in Portsmouth, Incidental Imagery, & Teignbridge’s T.R.A.I.L.
