“Life is like climbing into a boat, sailing out into the ocean and sinking.” - Suzuki Roshi
Working from this place of not knowing, my paintings come about through balancing an original idea or intention with intuition and accident. Often I compare my act of painting to that of mining the slagheap of my being, searching for some one thing, I know not what, that once I lost, hoping to recognise should I ever come upon it. Focussing on gesture, mark and colour the final pieces intend to disorient often offering the viewer little that is solid or certain for the eye to rest upon, inviting the unexpected and thus encouraging the question and subsequent enquiry.
