I’m first and foremost a colourist. I get tremendously excited by colour as an expression of the emotional energy generated by a particular scene or situation and I try to express this experience through my paintings.
Openings of all sorts often inform my work and are a key element in composing an image and providing a way into the depths of meaning the paintings try to convey. Oil is my preferred medium and I generally start with a fairly accurate representation of the scene I’ve chosen on which I build up layers to develop intensity of colour. I then scrape back in parts to reveal hidden forms until I feel my initial experience has become the life of the painting.
